Sameera Kalupahana paints in both oils and watercoloures.
The subjects for his paintings are mostly selected from on
his surroundings. He has most of his life in Walathra,Beruwala-
small town on the south westrn coast of Sri lanka.
Its mixed population [Beruwala is predominantly muslim with
Buddhists and Roman Catholics as Minorities] the simple
lives of the Fishing community, the somewhat-slower-than-
normal lifestyles provide him with the variety of colour
composition and themes that go in to his paintings.sameera
was affected by the Tsunami wave of 26th December 2004
that Devastated the coastal ragions of sri lanka.He considers
himself among the luckier ones - he lost only a number
of paintings that were on sale in one of the galleries.
sameera paints portraits, landscapes,scenes from everyday
life, still-life sudies of objects from rural sri lankan life
and the human figure appear in his paintings in various
compositions.His painting show a simple but firm handling
of themes, composition and colour. He does not complicate
his painting but shows his love for his chocen subjects
and the beauty he sees in his surroundings through balanced
handling.

Sameera says that he intends to devote more time to the study
of the human figure. So we may see more figure paintings by
him in the years to come. He says,of late,that he finds freud's
work fascinating.sameera intends to keep to his own style of

In terms of technique, sameera uses the layered approach to
oil painting-building up the painting in layers-reflecting the years
of formal instruction he received. He likes to prepare his own
canvesses using a modified version of the traditional gesso
approach. His watercolours show a love to use thin washes,
wet-on -wet with only a few sharp edges in same brush strokes .

sameera was born in 1970 in Galle in the south of sri lanka
an his family moved to their present houes in Walathara, Beruwala
when he was still small. He has been living there since. in
school he studied commerce as his main subject area for his
G.C.E. [AL]s. After leaving school he started painting in Water
colours and was largely self-taught except for bith of advice
that he got from senior artists. He entered many art competitions
for students and was aoticed as having talent. In 2000 he entered
the vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts in Sri Lanka. Here he began
receiving formal instructions in drawing, painting and sculpture
under experenced professional teachers. It was at the vibhavi Academy
that sameera began to study oil painting an sculpture.He has
participated in a number of exhibitions.
